The Science of fairy tales

Kids of any age love to read fairy tales because the storyline never limits the possibility that anything could happen. Curses, spells, and handsome princes reign in worlds beyond the reader’s imagination.

But are the most magical moments from some of our favorite stories actually possible? Basic physical principles and recent scientific research suggest that what readers might mistake for fantasies and exaggeration could be rooted in reality.

So suspend your imagination for a moment, and look at the following fairy tales as a hard-core scientist might.

Rapunzel

In the Brothers Grimm story of Rapunzel, a witch holds a beautiful young woman captive in a tower. Rapunzel is blessed with a lovely singing voice and long, long blond hair. One day, her voice enchants a prince passing through a nearby forest. They fall in love, and Rapunzel lets down her hair so that the prince may use it to climb the tower to meet her. This chain of events begs readers to ask a question. Can human hair support the weight of another person?

On average one strand of hair can support about three and one-half ounces, or about the weight of two candy bars. Each strand of dark hair is generally thicker, and therefore stronger, than blond hair.

But, alas, Rapunzel must make do with blond locks. Given that blondes generally have about 140,000 hairs on their heads, her hair should easily support the weight of many, many princes. However, there is more to this story.

If Rapunzel simply let down her hair and the prince started climbing immediately, her hair would not break, but it might rip out. Also, the rest of her body might not be able to support the weight. Thankfully, there are strategies that she can use to help reduce the strain on her head and body.

Nathan Harshman, Assistant Professor of Physics at American University in Washington, DC, suggests Rapunzel would be safer and more secure if she tied her hair around something before lowering it. “The whole idea is that you can use the friction of the hair against itself in the knot, and whatever it is tied around will support the weight of the prince.” That is a much better idea than making Rapunzel’s scalp the anchor point.

The Little Mermaid

In the Disney version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Ariel (the mermaid) asks a witch to make her human because she has fallen in love with a human prince. The witch bargains with Ariel and takes her voice in exchange for performing the transformation. For a considerable part of the story Ariel cannot speak, which is a problem because the prince can only recognize her by her incredibly beautiful singing voice. Later, she recovers her voice and wins the love of the prince (sorry to spoil the ending).

In the story, Ariel loses her voice because of a curse. However, a less skilled sorceress could use a different method to silence a singing mermaid. Scientists have figured out a way to bend sound waves around an object and, can even prevent the escape of all sounds created inside a given area (important for keeping a transformed, singing mermaid from being heard).

Recently, Steve Cummer, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University announced that it is theoretically possible to create such a sound shield. Building on research demonstrating how light waves can be bent around an object to make it appear invisible, Cummer and his collaborators used mathematical analysis to show how to do the same thing with sound. They established that it is possible to create a material that bends sound waves around walls, pillars, or any enclosed area, where the sound waves emerge as if nothing had been in their way. It would be like someone in the bedroom being able to hear what someone in the living room said, but as if there were no wall between them.

A side effect of this discovery is that sound waves generated inside the enclosed area would never escape. If the witch had been extremely clever, she could have built this material, and there would have been no need for a curse. Or maybe she did, and a transparent sound shield based on these principles was what enveloped Ariel until her love for the Prince melted it away, finally releasing her melodious voice for the Prince to hear.

1,001 Arabian Nights

One of the most exciting objects found in fairy tales is the flying carpet. In tales from a wide variety of cultures, including 1,001 Arabian Nights, these tangled tapestries take flight to carry people vast distances. Flying carpets are clearly impossible, right?

Three scientists recently published a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters showing that there are conditions under which a carpet could fly. They used the basic laws of physics to show that a small, thin carpet could fly if the air were vibrating at the right frequency, much like how a piece of tissue paper floats softly to the ground when it is dropped. Their calculations showed that small waves of air in repeated fast pulses could steer a carpet at a speed of around one foot per second.

Don’t expect to see Aladdin flying by anytime soon, but the scientists write that all of their conditions “are within the realm of possibilities in nature and in technology. Making a heavy carpet fly would, of course, require a much more powerful engine, and our
[calculations] suggest it will remain in the magical, mystical, and virtual realm as it has existed for millennia.”

Perhaps some fairy tales are more grounded in reality than others. Or maybe these precious stories are exactly what we thought they were. An idea is fertilized by the imagination and expanded beyond what seems possible. Or maybe science has come so far over the years that scientists are looking beyond the problems of the physical world and into the imaginations of children for their inspiration.

What could be next? Perhaps a scientific debate over the temperature at which porridge is considered “just right.”

I am asking you to

I just got this from silverpixie's site and I decided to repost it. wala akong magawa eh...

QUESTION #1:
What will you have for your last meal?

My answer:

To start: crab and egg soup + ceasar salad + tuna sushi
Drinks: Red wine (any brand will do as long as it's smooth to the throat and it won't choke me while eating)
1st round: Grilled Blue Marlin dipped with lemon and worcestershire sauce + Lobster with butter
2nd round: Baked mussels topped with cheese
3rd round: Medium Rare Beef Ribeye + self made gravy + my dad's Italian style spaghetti and my mom's lasagna
Dessert: Tita Amie's Leche Flan
To cap it all off: Blue Mountain Coffee

QUESTION #2:
If you're given a chance to change your entire name, what would it be? I'm not looking for a witty name. Be honest and tell me your "dream name".

My answer:
Iris Alexandria or Iris Emmanuelle or Jacinthe Alexandria or Jacinthe Emmanuelle.
Why? So people won't ask me no more about the meaning of my present name.....and the names I have mentioned are cool!

QUESTION #3:
What is your dream job? Say NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

My answer:
A professional events photographer, copywriter and a film maker.
I would love to be behind the camera and take interesting and relevant photographs. If I would have been physically healthy and fit, I want to be sent to war zones and take pictures of current happenings in the middle of bombings.
I dream of conceptualizing ADs for print and TV.
Of course, I want to make movies...If I will be the star of my own film, why not? hehehe

QUESTION #4:
If you can talk to a dead person who would that be and why?

My answer:
Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. I will confront them about the truth. I want to know if they were really from a royal family, if both of them got married and had a child. And if He gives me affirmation then I will let Him know that these things do not matter. If it's true that He sacrificed His life for the whole of Humanity, whether He is a bachelor or a married man, what He did was enough to prove His worth.

Yes! I want a new toy (not that kind of toy, damn it! I am not into those kinds of toy). I did not have this strong desire to have that toy not until I saw one from Phutie's site and Danabelle's.

I am talking about this....

or this...

I have to grab one of these...by hook or by crook!

who-has-done-what

As I browse IMDB, Wiki and some sites that show celebrities before-and-after photos, I also checked on Filipino Celebs to scrutinize whether they have also undergone rhinoplasty, boob surgeries, botox and collagen. Omigosh, I'm becoming more obsessed knowing who's-done-what as I go through their photos. In America, there is no doubt that almost all famous names have undergone different kinds of face and body enhancements. Say, Jacko and Janet, name it, they have done it, Tara Reid's obsession with liposuction, Nicole K. and Kylie's excessive botox injections etc.

But in the Philippines, surgeries like mentioned above are not so widespread. If so, they will not admit it. Regine Velasquez once said that she did not undergo rhinoplasty but she will definitely deny what is obvious. Gretchen Baretto and Pops Fernandez are among famous Filipino Celebs who obviously have collagen injected onto their lips, but again, they denied it.

Another funny celeb was Maui Taylor...who keeps on saying (til this date) that her boobs are real and that she is just so gifted (tell that to the marines, Ms. Taylor).

But what stunned me the most was KC Concepcion's recent photos (who happened to be my most favorite celebrity in the whole wide world). Apparently, she had (or may not) her upper lip injected with collagen to make it appear fuller (?). Click on the link and look at the photos below and be the judge.

But despite this speculation, true or not, she will remain beautiful to me and to others, inside and out.

highlighting my 2007

2007 was a big blast and a minor downfall atleast for me at the same time. I became more spiritual, started blogging excessively, met a lot of new friends and acquaintances, gained more knowledge from my curiosity and other people's generosity. I also learned to spend my earnings wisely but not to the extent of being stingy. Though I have been dreaming to be a photographer by profession, the urge of being one turned out to be one of my priorities.

Also, I realized that I don't love my job anymore. Not a single day that I look forward going to work if not for my friends at work. My temper became shorter and I lost my sense of responsibility when it comes to serving my customers. Most often than not, I get too touchy with situations and losing my self control. But I am sure that it's not late to change all these and revive the old me.

Anyway, here are some of my 'minor' accomplishments during 2007 which I consider as great factors for being a better person towards 2008:

  • March 2007. It was such an honor to land the Radio Star Finals (UAE edition) and defeated among other 2000+ hopefuls vying for the title. Finally, I landed 3rd and not bad for a 'first timer'. my radiostar audition
  • Trivia: Along with my Radiostar schedules, I got the chance to audition for Pinoy Pop Superstar too (world edition) but after I passed, I backed out because of schedule conflicts.
  • I was given a chance to manage a store with staff. For this matter, I gained knowledge about people management and the likes.
  • I was able to filter my real friends from who are not during my 27th birthday. see more photos
  • Since lately, I am showing extreme enthusiasm with photography, I submitted one of my shots to Xpress, a local tabloid in UAE. Luckily, it got selected and it was published. (beginner's luck eh?) photo that was published

There you go. These are my so called 'minor' accomplishments during 2007. I hope you enjoyed reading this blog as much as I enjoyed writing it! Cheers!

untitled

From the time I learnt to trust other souls more than I trust mine,
I also learnt the art of love reciprocation

Love for God
Love for my parents
Love for my classmates
Love for my real and not-so-real friends
And later on, love for him, HER or them

Going through puberty has never been easy
Walking along with my pretty friends made me feel ugly
Made me feel less confident about myself
But I felt normal and superior when I speak with them
When I speak my mind
I never felt so weak and futile and restless not until now

Now.
For the past years
That I have been giving in – my heart, my soul, my body
But not my mind so to speak
I loved crazily
I am not sure if I am still capable of loving
Someone, crazily
After the storm
After the darkness covered my last ray of light

I need to shield my worn out heart for any danger
I need to reserve a beautiful life for me
It’s not my problem if they did not love me
As much as I did
What matters most is that I loved them with all my heart
And strength?

So help me my God
to get sober
and numb.

50 first dates

One week ago, I watched one of my favorite movies, 50 First Dates, once again (again?). Of course, who would not be familiar with this film starred by Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, two of the most sought actors in Hollywood. It is a funny movie supported by Rob Schneider and a very touching one at the same time. Incredible as it may seem but I am pretty sure that there’s still like Henry out there willing to narrate or videotape their lives everyday so Lucy could remember who she is to Henry. I also wonder if someone who will stand by me if I suffer from short-term memory loss too. I won’t mind forgetting things every single day, if I know that one soul who loves me so much could do what Henry exactly did. I know I am too hopeless romantic kind of person living in this damn world, at least I am not a lousy lover (?). I cried and I cried and I cried over this motion picture….. After all, NOTHING BEATS A FIRST KISS, right?
